Hinsdale Central’s Martin Joyce hasn’t lost a match to an Illinois opponent this season and he doesn’t plan on dropping one in the next three days at the IHSA boys tennis state meet held at various sites in the northwestern suburbs. ARLINGTON HEIGHTS — Hinsdale Central was almost perfect — literally — in the three-day IHSA boys tennis state meet that concluded on Saturday at Hersey. The Red Devils claimed their fifth championship in seven years and broke the all-time scoring record with 59 points, one shy of a perfect score. “I couldn’t be more proud of these student athletes,” Hinsdale Central coach John Naisbitt said. “They’re talented tennis players, big-time performers and good people. Hinsdale Central doesn’t know who will be its next coach, but there will be talent to build around with names such as Chris Botsoe, Ryan Haff, Max Peters and Matt Muellner returning. Botsoe will be a junior leadoff hitter and starting center fielder, who has already committed to play baseball at Louisville after his high school career is done. Muellner was a designed hitter this season who is expected to play catcher next season. Hasper’s walk-off, two-run homer drove in the game’s only runs as eighth-seeded Waubonsie Valley beat ninth-seeded Hinsdale Central 2-0 in the Class 4A Hinsdale Central Regional semifinal. Next month, the Glenview-based private club will play host to the Encompass Championship, a first-time stop on the Champions Tour. The rivalry between Lake Forest (12-4) and Hinsdale Central (15-4) added another chapter when the two girls lacrosse teams met in the supersectional at Montini. For the past two years, it would have been hard to slip a sheet of paper between the two programs. Last year the Red Devils lost during the regular season to the Scouts 13-12 in overtime. But in the third-place game at the state tournament, Hinsdale won 12-6. Coincidently, the roles reversed this regular season when Hinsdale Central beat Lake Forest 13-12 in double overtime. Junior goalie Alexis (Lexi) Buglio knows the pressure that comes with being a Fenwick girls water polo player. Her older sister, Danielle, was an all-state player in the program, so Lexi had been around the perennial powerhouse for a while.
