Hinsdale Central’s Martin Joyce hasn’t lost a match to an Illinois opponent this season and he doesn’t plan on dropping one in the next three days at the IHSA boys tennis state meet held at various sites in the northwestern suburbs. The 6-foot-2 sophomore sports a 26-1 record — his only loss coming in a tournament in Kentucky — and he’s feeling confident about bringing home a singles title. “I pretty much played all the top guys in the state and I was fortunate to win all those matches,” Joyce said. “I feel like I’m playing well. ARLINGTON HEIGHTS — Hinsdale Central was almost perfect — literally — in the three-day IHSA boys tennis state meet that concluded on Saturday at Hersey. The Red Devils claimed their fifth championship in seven years and broke the all-time scoring record with 59 points, one shy of a perfect score. “I couldn’t be more proud of these student athletes,” Hinsdale Central coach John Naisbitt said. “They’re talented tennis players, big-time performers and good people. It’s a great day.” In the singles championship, Red Devils sophomore Martin Joyce topped Waubonsie Valley senior Eric Marbach 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, while Hinsdale Central’s No. … ]]> Sat, 25 May 2013 20:06:01 -0500 http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20345900-419/hinsdale-central-near-perfect-in-capturing-historic-state-championship.html http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20345900-419/hinsdale-central-near-perfect-in-capturing-historic-state-championship.html <![CDATA[ May 25 high school sports scoreboard ]]>

RIVERSIDE — Fenwick senior Cali Pyzdrowski could see that some of her teammates weren’t in the correct position for a set piece late in Saturday’s Class 2A Riverside-Brookfield Sectional final. It turned out just fine anyway. Pyzdrowski sent a free kick from midfield that took a high bounce and hit off the crossbar right to sophomore Sydney Jensen, who headed the ball into the corner of the net with 7 minutes, 14 seconds remaining in regulation. The Friars hung on for a 1-0 victory over defending state champion St. Francis. “I was actually freaking out because they weren’t set up … ]]> Sat, 25 May 2013 19:21:49 -0500 http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20256507-419/jensen-goal-stands-up-in-fenwick-win-over-st-francis.html http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20256507-419/jensen-goal-stands-up-in-fenwick-win-over-st-francis.html <![CDATA[ May 24 high school sports scoreboard ]]>

Hinsdale Central doesn’t know who will be its next coach, but there will be talent to build around with names such as Chris Botsoe, Ryan Haff, Max Peters and Matt Muellner returning. Botsoe will be a junior leadoff hitter and starting center fielder, who has already committed to play baseball at Louisville after his high school career is done. Muellner was a designed hitter this season who is expected to play catcher next season. One of the pleasant surprises was the emergence of junior shortstop Haff, who went from backup to everyday starter in a matter of a few days. … ]]> Fri, 24 May 2013 22:39:23 -0500 http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20326845-419/haff-seizes-opportunity-to-hold-down-shortstop-at-hinsdale-central.html http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20326845-419/haff-seizes-opportunity-to-hold-down-shortstop-at-hinsdale-central.html <![CDATA[ Hinsdale Central on record pace, advances all four entries to state semis ]]>

Hinsdale Central’s Michael Lorenzini and St. Charles East’s Japser Koenen went into the second day of the IHSA boys tennis state meet at Hersey as underdogs. The two singles players are 9-16 seeds, but they proved seeds don’t mean much as they both registered a pair of upsets to advance to Saturday’s semifinals. “I played two really good players and I just maintained my composure and hit my shots,” Lorenzini said. “I thought I could beat them. I’m a lower seed but anything can happen.” “I told myself, ‘You’ve got to where you were supposed to be. HINSDALE — Tyler Hasper knew he had won the game as soon as he connect on Bobby Skogsbergh’s 1-2 pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hasper’s walk-off, two-run homer drove in the game’s only runs as eighth-seeded Waubonsie Valley beat ninth-seeded Hinsdale Central 2-0 in the Class 4A Hinsdale Central Regional semifinal. Hasper thought his blast over the center-field fence came on a fastball from Skosbergh, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound right-hander heading to pitch at Boston College next season. But Skogsbergh said he threw a slider. “I left a slider up,” said Skogsbergh, who recovered from Tommy John surgery … ]]> Fri, 24 May 2013 21:02:00 -0500 http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20327637-419/hasper-homer-in-8th-carries-waubonsie-past-hinsdale-central.html http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20327637-419/hasper-homer-in-8th-carries-waubonsie-past-hinsdale-central.html <![CDATA[ North Shore seen as good fit for Champions Tour ]]>

GLENVIEW Everybody on stage at North Shore Country Club shared similar sentiments: It’s good for professional golf to be coming back to Chicago. Next month, the Glenview-based private club will play host to the Encompass Championship, a first-time stop on the Champions Tour. It’s a 54-hole tournament with a $1.8 million purse ($270,000 goes to the winner). The primary charities will be Bears Care and the McCormick Foundation. “Chicago obviously has a zillion great golf course, so why wouldn’t we be here?” said Rocco Mediate, who is best known for losing an 18-hole playoff to Tiger Woods at the 2008 … ]]> Fri, 24 May 2013 22:37:18 -0500 http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20320449-419/north-shore-seen-as-good-fit-for-champions-tour.html http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20320449-419/north-shore-seen-as-good-fit-for-champions-tour.html <![CDATA[ Red Devils foil familiar foe in playoffs ]]>

The rivalry between Lake Forest (12-4) and Hinsdale Central (15-4) added another chapter when the two girls lacrosse teams met in the supersectional at Montini. For the past two years, it would have been hard to slip a sheet of paper between the two programs. Last year the Red Devils lost during the regular season to the Scouts 13-12 in overtime. But in the third-place game at the state tournament, Hinsdale won 12-6. Coincidently, the roles reversed this regular season when Hinsdale Central beat Lake Forest 13-12 in double overtime. Just a twist of fate? Maybe not, said Hinsdale Central … ]]> Fri, 24 May 2013 22:37:19 -0500 http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20295440-419/red-devils-foil-familiar-foe-in-playoffs.html http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20295440-419/red-devils-foil-familiar-foe-in-playoffs.html <![CDATA[ May 23 high school sports scoreboard ]]>

LOMBARD — Sometimes they played straight up, other times they were in a zone. On occasion they would double-team the ballhandler, while at different points in the game they sat back and waited to be attacked. The Red Devils used a variety of defensive schemes to throw Lake Forest off its game, controlling the tempo in a 16-12 victory on Wednesday evening. The win at the Montini Supersectional lifted Hinsdale Central into the state semifinals for the eighth consecutive season. “Our defense was playing our hearts out,” said goalkeeper Kelly Melin. “We needed to step up down the stretch and … ]]> Fri, 24 May 2013 09:14:59 -0500 http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20252129-419/hinsdale-central-defense-gives-melin-plenty-of-support-against-lake-forest.html http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20252129-419/hinsdale-central-defense-gives-melin-plenty-of-support-against-lake-forest.html <![CDATA[ May 18 high school sports scoreboard ]]>

HINSDALE — Two second-half goals by senior Casey May propelled Hinsdale Central into the sectional final for the second year in a row with a 3-0 win over Benet. Hinsdale Central was held in check for the entire first half as the Redwings (17-5-1) kept the Red Devils (15-3-3) scoreless in spite of several decent opportunities. In the fifth minute of the second half, however, Red Devils senior forward Jenn Jarmy sent a long cross in front of the net. Senior midfielder Madeline Engelking passed it off to a wide-open May, who scored to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. … ]]> Fri, 24 May 2013 09:25:17 -0500 http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20171537-419/may-leads-hinsdale-central-to-sectional-final.html http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20171537-419/may-leads-hinsdale-central-to-sectional-final.html <![CDATA[ All-state will be tall order for Fenwick doubles ]]>

Fenwick senior Jack Ryan believes he could’ve been a pretty good basketball or football player. Instead, he decided to concentrate all of his attention on tennis. “It’s the sport that I love the most,” the 6-foot-7 Hinsdale resident said. “I’m probably better at tennis than the other sports, so I figured I might as well focus on one sport instead of spreading it all around.” Ryan certainly has no regrets about his decision, considering he will be making his third straight state appearance. Junior goalie Alexis (Lexi) Buglio knows the pressure that comes with being a Fenwick girls water polo player. Her older sister, Danielle, was an all-state player in the program, so Lexi had been around the perennial powerhouse for a while. But the stress ratcheted up this past year in her first year as a goalie. “She was a field player until the middle of last summer when I approached her about playing in the cage,” Fenwick head coach John Wagner said. “She had to replace a two-time state goalie.” That goalie, Mackenzie Bonk, had helped Fenwick capture the previous two … ]]> Thu, 23 May 2013 06:24:45 -0500 http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20235318-419/buglio-looks-to-build-on-first-year-in-the-fenwick-cage.html http://hinsdale.suntimes.com/sports/20235318-419/buglio-looks-to-build-on-first-year-in-the-fenwick-cage.html
