Hinsdale Middle School walks for good causes

HINSDALE — On a day when some Hinsdale Middle School students received their prize for successful fundraising for one cause, more students walked to raise money for another cause. The team from Hinsdale Middle School raised the most money among District 181 schools in the Walk for Autism April 28. Their total, $5,100, beat The Lane School by only $10, said Christa Roehl, the parent captain for the middle school team, along with Jacqui Wooldridge. The College of DuPage Board got its first look at the proposed 2014 budget May 16. While the college’s financial rating is good, challenges loom in the immediate future, challenges that may lead to an increase in tuition. At the core of the college’s potential problems is the failure of the state of Illinois to deliver on funding education, college officials said. “The state continues to be a significant challenge to the college,” said Thomas Glaser, senior vice president of finance and administration. CLARENDON HILLS — Music is returning to District 181 summer school after a one-year hiatus. “There’s definitely an interest for this, and it’s a great opportunity for those students to get some outstanding private instruction,” said Eric Chisausky, co-director of the summer school program in Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Elementary District 181. Band and orchestra students can use the summer for private lessons taught by professional musicians who have been screened by district music staff. Hinsdale District 86 to rebid summer construction projects

HINSDALE — Hinsdale High School District 86 officials will hold off on some summer projects under contract, at a cancelation cost of up to $30,000. Doug Lim, manager for the construction firm Gilbane Inc., said he probably would be able to negotiate Gilbane’s $17,000 cancelation fee to about $9,100, said Superintendent Nicholas Wahl. District officials had proposed redoing the hallways, one or two areas at a time, from ceiling to floor, with new light fixtures and wall coverings, and painting the lockers in the school colors. Westview Hills Middle School is hosting its eighth annual Night of the Fine Arts at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the school, 630 65th St. Willowbrook. The evening kicks off at 6 p.m. with a display of the best student artwork of the year. At 7 p.m., the spring band concert will be presented with the theme A Night at the Movies. LAGRANGE PARK More than 300 students dressed their best for Nazareth Academy High School’s prom May 11 at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace. Faculty adviser Kate Augustyn said 370 students attended the dance and headed downtown afterward for a midnight cruise on Lake Michigan. Aboard the Spirit of Chicago, party-goers enjoyed more dancing with two DJs, buffets and sightseeing Chicago’s skyline. LAGRANGE PARK — Nazareth Academy physics teacher Roberta Zasadzinski, sees an opportunity to deepen her students’ learning through the school’s pillar of service. After attending a week-long engineering workshop in 2012, Zasadzinski brought Engineering Projects in Community Service to Nazareth, the first suburban school to participate in the program. HINSDALE — B.J. Ryan, a freshman at Hinsdale Central High School, finished fourth in the U.S. Geography Olympiad held in Arlington, Va. More than 150 students nationwide qualified to compete in the national event April 26. The competition included two written tests and then three rounds of bowl-style questions, where the one first one to answer correctly won the point. Ryan was one of 12 students to advance to the Junior Varsity final round, where the finalists had to answer two more sets of 30 questions that often included history or current event clues. HINSDALE — As part of their study of poetry, fourth-graders at Oak School in Hinsdale held a poetry slam, reading poems they wrote to their parents. And their parents were asked to recite poems to them. “It shows kids you can enjoy poetry at any age,” teacher Heather Giese said. The children’s poems were about dolphins, Ninjas, sneakers and snakes. Kendall Griffin read a poem she wrote, called, “Ready, Set, Run.” “I wanted to write about how I would feel when I get faster on my track team,” Kendall said.
