Firefighters came out in force on a beautiful day without a flame in sight for the Hinsdale Professional Firefighters Association’s third annual Big’s Bare Knuckle Softball Tournament held Sept. 21 at Veeck Park in Hinsdale.

The tournament honors Deputy Fire Chief Mark Johnson who lost his life in the line of duty in 2010.

Firefighters from around the area, as well as scores of Hinsdale residents, came out to honor Chief Johnson and his family, and raised $11,000. The Western Springs Fire Department, LaGrange Park Fire Department, Westmont Fire Department, Pleasantview Fire Protection District, Hinsdale Police Department and the Hinsdale Department of Public Works all fielded teams in the tournament.

The Department of Public Works, which has won three straight games in three straight years, retained the title of Big’s Bare Knuckle Softball Tournament Champion and won a specially designed fire helmet and leather shield, as well as bragging rights for one year.

The Hinsdale Professional Firefighters Association will donate $5,000 to the Hinsdale Wellness House, $1,002 to Hinsdale’s Safety Village and will send two children to Camp “I Am Me,” the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance burn camp for children.
