HINSDALE — Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Elementary District 181 held its 6th Annual District Spelling Bee Feb. 6.

The participants included the top two finishers from Clarendon Hills Middle School, Hinsdale Middle School and Prospect School. Each of the three schools held individual spelling bee events to determine those who would compete at the district level. Those top finishers included: Lia Fawley, fourth grade (Prospect), Nick Lynch, fifth grade (Prospect), Daniel Piniero, seventh grade (HMS), Finn Voorhees, eighth grade (HMS), Adam Tweardy, seventh grade (CHMS), and Joey Kolnicki, sixth grade (CHMS).

The words students were asked to spell included: angelic, safari, stoic, windily, nether, admiral, pretzel, grabble, barrow, fathom, knapsack, ductile, quiver and tithe. At the conclusion, Lynch was the top finalist and Fawley finished second; both represented the district at the County Bee on Feb. 20.

CHMS Language Arts teacher Marie Bond coordinated the event, with assistance from colleagues Vivian Beach, Cheryl Esparza, Jennifer McCredy and Danielle Scacco. Retired teacher Nancy Grapenthien served as the word caller.
