Phantom Tollbooth wins Hinsdale South’s band battle

DARIEN — The Indy Rock band Phantom Tollbooth took home the prize at Hinsdale South High School’s third annual Battle of the Bands.
The band, which includes lead singer and guitarist James Matkovich, guitarist Jack Stanton, bassist Kyle Labak and drummer Nick Cardilli, won coaching and a professional photo shoot from School of Rock in Hinsdale.
Professionals from School of Rock also served as the contest judges.
“We had a great turn out from both the parents and students,” said Brian Ormiston, president of the Hinsdale South Foundation.
The foundation holds the Battle of the Bands each year. And while it isn’t a moneymaker for the fundraising group, it is always a fun event.
Four bands competed for this year’s prize.
“We had a great mix of musical styles, from rock to blues and even one band pushing the limits with the grunge/punk movement,” Ormiston said.
The crowd of about 100 enjoyed Zazzo’s Pizza while listening to the bands. Student DJs Jerhvon Rodriguez and Darrien Griffen kept the crowd entertained between sets.
