Monroe School in Hinsdale launches South African study
HINSDALE — Monroe School in Elementary District 181 has launched 4-week long South African study project. Students will be applying for loans, producing, promoting, marketing and selling products at an African Market to be held at Monroe School.
Production will take place until Dec. 14 and sold at an African Market Dec. 19. The project will tie in with the new Illinois Core Standards and some of the new district teaching. This study is part of an annual international study program developed and implemented by two Monroe parent volunteers focusing on a different country each year.
Using a country study each year as the context for teaching core curriculum topics, the international program exemplifies an elementary level approach to teaching 21st century learning skills which include: Critical Thinking, Differentiated Learning, Team Work and Utilizing Technology. International awareness provides a platform for teaching social and emotional learning for academic success from a global perspective by encouraging the children to see the world through someone else’s eyes.
Over the past five years, students have explored the countries of Brazil, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden, Australia, India and South Africa through monthly lessons in geography, economics, the arts, government, the environment and history.
