Nazareth Academy screens 367 students for heart conditions

After losing two former student-athletes, Phil Kaiser ‘08 and Jeremy Izzo ‘99, Nazareth Academy has rallied to the cause of Sudden Cardiac Death.
The Midwest Heart Foundation brought the Young Hearts for Life Cardiac Screening Program to Nazareth Academy.
“As a parent, taking care of our kids is built into our DNA,” said Dr. Joseph Marek of Midwest Heart Advocate Medical Group. “When we look at our healthy, athletic sons and daughters, we can’t imagine heart risk. That’s why we need an objective test like an EKG.”
The test itself takes only about three minutes. Students came to the Rooney Center during their study halls, answered questions about their activities, and then had a few electrodes placed on them for the test. They returned to class a few minutes later.
The results are then viewed by cardiologists as a group. If that group sees any cause for concern, a doctor calls the student’s parents.
Ultimately, any concerns should be brought to the child’s doctor. ~.
