BURR RIDGE — As the Burr Ridge Park District seniors traveled to Chicago on Tuesday, many couldn’t help but notice that something was missing.
Unlike most trips, this one didn’t include Marguerite Lehner.
“I thought about her,” said Lavonne Campbell, superintendent of recreation.
“She was the first senior I met at the park district when I started more than 20 years ago,” said Campbell. “In the 22 years I’ve been doing this, I bet she hasn’t missed a handful of events or trips”
Lehner, a longtime former resident of Burr Ridge and a former Park Board member, died Feb. 7, leaving a noticable void that won’t soon be filled.
“She counted the days between the trips. She just loved them so much,” Lehner’s daughter, Mar Gee Farr, said.
She said her mother not only loved the park district trips out luncheons, she also loved the people and the community.
Farr, who with her six sisters and brother was raised in Hinsdale, said her mother wasted no time getting involved when she made the move from Hinsdale to Burr Ridge in 1986.
She served eight years on the Park Board, representing the needs and desires of her fellow seniors. She had to step down from the board when she moved to Willowbrook 10 years ago but the short commute didn’t keep her away from the park district she loved.
Along with outings and lunches, Lehner regularly attended Harvest Fest, the Easter egg hunt and Breakfast With Santa, but her favorite event, Farr said, was Halloween.
“She always dressed in costume,” she said. “Her best was Cruella DeVille.”
It was Lehner’s wish to keep giving to the park district even after her death, asking that donations be made in her name to the Burr Ridge Community Park Foundation.
Donations can be sent, in Lehner’s memory, to Burr Ridge Community Park Foundation, 15W400 Harvester Drive, Burr Ridge IL 60527, or by visiting brparks.org.
