HINSDALE — Two women each were charged with driving under the influence of alcohol using the same car, perhaps a first in the village, police report.

Bethany S. Halperin, 36, 433 Bruner Place, Hinsdale, and Roxanne L. Wallace, 22, 639 Champlaine Ave., Westmont, each were charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after Wallace’s silver Chevrolet Aveo crashed into a tree Friday evening.

At about 10:50 p.m. Dec. 7, someone reported a car had struck a tree in the front yard of a home on North Street where it intersects Bruner Place in northwestern Hinsdale, said Deputy Police Chief Mark Wodka said.

When the police arrived, they saw the damaged tree, but no car. Witnesses said the woman who was driving the Aveo when it hit the tree got out of the car after the crash. The witnesses said a passenger in the Aveo, whom police later identified as Wallace, then got in the driver’s seat and drove the car north on Bruner and parked it in a driveway, which turned out to be the driveway at Halperin’s house. The police officer charged Halperin with driving the car during the collision.

The police allege both women were under the influence of alcohol.

Wodka said he does not recall another case where two people were charged with DUI for driving the same car.

In addition to DUI, Halperin was charged with driving while her license was suspended for prior DUI arrests, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Halperin was taken to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital for a blood test because she refused to take any sobriety tests, Wodka said.

The police appreciated that the citizens who saw what occurred got involved and talked to the officers. Otherwise, Wodka said. “We wouldn’t know what all had happened. We would just see a damaged tree.”
