Hinsdale platform tennis courts being rewired

HINSDALE — An electrician started repairs Monday on the wiring for the platform tennis courts in Katherine Legge Memorial Park.
The lights began malfunctioning about a month ago, said Gina Hassett, director of Hinsdale’s Parks and Recreation Department. Workers discovered the wiring for the four original paddle courts had not been installed according to code, resulting in “dangerous connections below the courts,” Hassett stated in a memo to the Hinsdale Village Board.
The power was turned off to those four courts as of Nov. 9, Hassett said.
People continued to play during the daylight, but there was no electricity for heating or lighting the courts. Evening matches were rescheduled and relocated to either the two new courts in KLM or the platform tennis courts in Burns Field.
The Village Board last week approved a $16,688 contract with Phillips Electric to rewire the 32 lights affected. Workers were not available to start until Monday. The new wiring for the most southeastern court was expected to be installed and ready to operate by Tuesday, with an additional court being repaired and ready each subsequent day, if the weather permits.
Hassett believes the wiring problem existed since the courts were installed in 2003, although the lights did not malfunction until recently.~.
