The Second Annual Big’s Bare Knuckle Softball Tournament, hosted by the Hinsdale Fire Department to honor late Deputy Chief Marc Johnson, helped raise $10,000 for Hinsdale’s Safety Village. The money also will pay for at least one child to attend Camp I Am Me, a two-week summer camp for child burn victims.
The tournament was held on Sunday, Sept. 16 in Veeck Park in Hinsdale.
Several local fire departments, including Western Springs, Westmont, Oak Brook, Clarendon Hills, LaGrange Park and the Pleasantview Fire Protection District, participated in the tournament. But it was Hinsdale’s Public Works Department who won the championship title again in a tough battle with the Hinsdale Fire Department.
Most of the money was collected from raffles, with prizes given away at the end of the championship game.
Matt Johnson, Deputy Chief Johnson’s son, took a day off from his duties as the assistant athletic trainer for the Chicago Cubs, to play with the Hinsdale Fire Department. When Johnson returned to work the next day, the Chicago Cubs players took up a collection in the locker room and presented him with $1,800 for the event. ~.
