Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills Memorial Day activities planned

Hinsdale’s annual Memorial Day procession is scheduled for 10 am. Monday, kicking off at First and Garfield streets.
The procession, which includes the Hinsdale Central band and several youth organizations, is scheduled to last about 30 minutes and conclude at Memorial Hall, 19 E. Chicago Ave., said Joseph Craig of Hinsdale American Legion Post 250.
After the procession, a 45-minute ceremony will be conducted at Memorial Hall, which will include the reading of names of those posted on the Memorial Wall, a tribute to Hinsdale residents who have been killed in action.
Craig said village presidents from Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Burr Ridge and Oak Brook have been invited to attend the procession and ceremony.
Prior to the Memorial Day procession, a memorial service is scheduled for 7 a.m. at Bronswood Cemetery, 3805 Madison St.
Nearby, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2938 in Darien, which has members from several area communities, has two events planned for Memorial Day.
A 9 a.m. ceremony with 1,400 American flags is scheduled at Clarendon Hills Cemetery, 6900 S. Cass Ave., Darien, followed at 11 a.m. by another ceremony at Darien Community Park, at Plainfield and Clarendon Hills roads.
Along with Memorial Day activities, the Hinsdale American Legion Post 250 and the Hinsdale VFW are conducting Poppy Day on Thursday (May 24).
Members will be on street corners and in shopping areas in Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills.
“This is a program of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the VFW Illinois is one of only two states where poppies are made by veterans in nursing homes and hospitals,” Craig said. “The Legion and VFW buy the poppies, as the vets are paid a small amount for each poppy produced. All funds collected on Poppy Day are used to benefit those veterans.”
Craig said poppies are produced in honor of those who have died in wars to benefit living veterans.
“It’s based on the poem ‘Flanders Field,’ which reflects on poppies that grew on the graves of our American forces buried in France,” Craig said.
