An old idea has been taking on a popular new twist at The Lane School.
PE nights are being conducted for each grade level at The Lane, after physical education teacher Ruth Jewell decided to bring something back a former teacher used to do at Walker School in Clarendon Hills.
“I always thought it was a great idea when they did it before,” Jewell said Jan. 18 during a break from three session of PE night for first-graders and their parents. “It’s like our curriculum night. This lets the parents see what PE is in the 21st century.”
While parents had the opportunity to get a first-hand look at what goes on in the PE classes their children have during the school day and experience some of the activities with their kids, it was the first-graders at the Jan. 18 PE night who seemed to be having the best time.
“We ask the students to come back for this because they get to be the teachers,” said Dan Ozga, the PE teacher who coordinated the night along with Jewell.
“The kids just love having the chance to show their parents what they do and teaching them how to do it,” Jewell said.
Todd Videbeck attended a first-grade session of PE night with his son Jack.
“I wanted to learn a little more about what Jack does in PE class, and I think it’s great,” Todd Videbeck said.
And Jack was very pleased to have his dad spend some time with him at school.
“I love sports, and my dad loved sports, too, when he was a kid,” Jack said.
Jack even gave his dad credit for doing “pretty good” while taking a turn inside a netted area at which everyone else threw balls in an attempt to get them inside, while whoever was sitting inside tried to throw the balls back out.
Frank Gonzalez decided to attend PE night after his son, Tyler, asked.
“He encouraged me to come, and I wanted to see it first-hand,” Frank Gonzalez said. I think it’s wonderful.”
Tyler also thought the evening was wonderful.
“I liked it, and I’m glad my dad came,” he said. “I really wanted to play games again with my dad.”
