“The Merchant of Venice” will be presented by First Folio Theatre through Aug. 19 as part of its Shakespeare-under-the-Stars series on the outdoor main stage at the Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St., Oak Brook. Based on the 1915 novel by John Buchan and the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film, “The 39 Steps” is a fast-paced comedy thriller that introduced the “man on the run” genre to Hollywood. “Hot Jazz - 6 Cool Nites” concert series, 7:30 p.m. July 21-27 at North Central College’s Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth, Naperville. The series is presented in conjunction with the 24th annual Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp, and features the jazz artists who comprise its faculty roster for the weeklong educational workshop. Each evening of the series will feature a different combination of artists and musical selections. Casting call
Auditions for the CBS show “Survivor” will be held July 15 at Brookfield Zoo, 8400 31st St., Brookfield. Spirito! Singers is now holding final auditions for both its fifth- through eighth-grade Ragazze ensemble and its ninth- through 12th-grade Bravura ensemble for the 2012-13 season, which starts in August. Spirito! is a choral organization open to young women in Elmhurst, La Grange, Oak Brook, Hinsdale, Western Springs, Downers Grove, and surrounding western and southwestern suburbs. Spirito! also presents Men of Spirito!, an ensemble for men 18 years of age and older. Spirito! seeks to develop musicianship and vocal technique using the repertoire of sacred choral music. Each year, all three Spirito ensembles perform major concerts in December and May or June. In addition, each group sings at six to eight community service events per season. The Fox Valley Academy of Music Performance will hold auditions on Aug. 19 at the orchestras’ rehearsal location, Eden Supportive Living in North Aurora. Zoppé, an Italian family circus, performs July 18-22 under a tent in the parking lot at Caputo’s Fresh Market, 510 West Lake St., Addison. The one-ring circus features clown Giovanni Zoppé, an equestrian ballerina, dancing dogs and aerial acrobats. Exhibits
A public display of 60 hand-painted and working six-foot clocks has been installed in La Grange as part of an outdoor art exhibit throughout the downtown business district and West End. Local businesses sponsored the clocks and secured local artists, both professional and amateur, to design the timepieces which will be exhibited on the sidewalks throughout the summer. With the theme “Hour Town La Grange — Time Well Spent,” the artists have created clocks ranging from sophisticated to outlandish, contemporary to traditional. The clocks will be auctioned for charity on Sept. 7. An exhibit walking map is available at various La Grange businesses and is posted online at www.lgba.com.
