The Doings Hinsdale

HINSDALE — Despite appearing on BP’s list of gas stations that received substandard fuel, employees at the BP station in Hinsdale say their fuel is fine. BP posted on its website a searchable list of stations which received substandard, or as the company calls it, “off-specification” gasoline. The BP station on the northwest corner of Ogden Avenue and York Road is one of the stations, which “did receive off-specification gasoline associated with problems . . . at BP’s Whiting, Indiana refinery,” the website states. However, the website posting goes on to say, “Consumers who obtained fuel from the listed sites may or may not have filled up with off- specification fuel.” The manager of the Hinsdale BP station said the station appears on the list merely as a precaution. BP first announced it had found a problem with regular grade gasoline blended at BP’s Whiting, Ind., storage terminal between Aug. 13 and 17. Residue in the gas caused starting and other driving problems in some cars. Later, the company said subpar gas also was found in storage terminals in Milwaukee. On Aug. 24, following instructions from the BP corporate office, the manager of the Hinsdale station posted signs on the pumps saying the midgrade and premium levels of gas, that is those pumped with the silver and gold handles, were not for sale. The manager, who did not want to be named, said all the gas sold at the station was safe to use. His records show the station receives its fuel from terminals in Rockford and Forest View, Ill. As a precaution, he said, BP removed all the premium grade gas from the Hinsdale station storage tank and replaced it with gas produced after the problem was corrected. The premium grade is blended with regular grade fuel at the station to make the midlevel grade. The manager said Aug. 30 that none of his customers have reported problems with their vehicles after filling up at the Hinsdale station. “We have not had complaints from anybody,” said the manager, who claims he uses the gas from that station in his car.
