HINSDALE — A Hinsdale man is out $7,800 after falling victims to a series of scams.

The resident received telephone calls from someone telling him he had won a car and prize money, but he needed to send money to collect the prizes. On Jan. 22, he sent a money order for $1,000, and a second payment of $2,400. Each was mailed to an address in a different state.

The resident spoke to both a man and a woman on the telephone who instructed him to also buy prepaid MoneyPak cards and notify them what the card numbers were. The man bought 11 MoneyPak cards, which cost $400 each, and told the con artists the numbers on the cards, which allows the couple to use the cards to make purchases.

At that point, the resident had given the strangers a total of $7,800.

An employee of a bank where the man was withdrawing money suspected he might be the victim of a scam and notified the police on Jan. 26.

The police are investigating.
