Davis up in 7th Congressional

CHICAGO — Democratic incumbent Danny K. Davis held a large lead and was set to retain his seat in the 7th Congressional District Tuesday.
With 577 of 593 precincts reporting, Democrat Danny Davis had 225,787 votes, versus 28,938 for Republican Rita Zak and 11,711 votes for Independent John Monaghan.
Davis (D-7) has represented the seventh district for 15 years.
“Fifteen years isn’t really all that long for a member of Congress,” he said. “Congress is a thinking place.
“It’s not like you can go out and play baseball,” he said. “If your mind is sharp and know what to do and how to make use of it, you can do this for a long time.”
One of his opponents for the Congressional seat, John H. Monaghan, had military veterans on his mind, past and present, when he decided to run against Davis. Monaghan, 64, lives in Oak Park, and knows there are people in his village as well as the district who need help.
His remained optimistic voters would come his way.
“A lot of people (voters) looked my way,” he said. “I woke up the neighborhood a little bit.”
“For somebody who had nothing, I did something,” he said.
Republican Rita Zack was also in Tuesday’s race.
