Girl, 11, struck by vehicle Feb. 9 at Garfield and First

Updated: April 16, 2012 1:42AM

An 11-year-old girl crossing the street at First Street and Garfield Avenue in downtown Hinsdale was struck by a vehicle about 3 p.m. Feb. 9 while she was walking within the crosswalk.

Police said the girl was walking with at least two other pedestrians when a vehicle turning left from westbound First to southbound Garfield turned into the group. The driver of the vehicle reportedly did not see the pedestrians due to her vision obstructed by sunlight.

The girl was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove for non-life threatening injuries and released.

The 41-year-old driver of the vehicle, Teresa Urquhart, of Willowbrook, was driving a 2008 Chrysler Pacifica. She was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian and released.

A four-way stop was installed Feb. 2 at the intersection, in response to concerns about safety of children of nearby Hinsdale Middle School. Prior to that, only vehicles traveling on First Street were affected by stop signs.

Hinsdale Police Chief Brad Bloom said installation of the additional stop signs at the intersection was not related to the accident.

“It does, however, underscore the presence of pedestrians at this intersection, which was one of the reasons the new stop signs were installed,” he said.

The Police Department initiated a traffic study of the intersection following a November crash involving a boy, who was not seriously hurt, and receiving several requests from residents, seeking the installation of a multiway stop sign, Bloom said.
